Perhaps we should call the fact that men can perform actions a ‘mystery’ – in the sense that it is something basic which defies explanation. At least, I cannot imagine what an ‘explanation’ would conceivably look like. We can wonder at this mystery – as we may wonder at the fact that man can know things or that there is an external world. It is interesting to note that wonder of this type can be both the starting point and the end station of philosophical inquiry.
